Lights

Did Mitt Romney request this color scheme or was this Orrin Hatch's idea?

I finally figured out how to take pictures at night with my Canon A630. Last night, I went with my friend, Tickle the Pear and her husband, MoBob, to the Mormon Temple in Kensington to see this year's Festival of Lights. While they spoke French with a missionary in the visitor's center, I wandered around the grounds snapping photos.

Who was it who said, "Sometimes more isn't better. It's just more."
Actually, for a light show, this one's pretty tasteful. I just like that quote.

My friend, JaneAnnchovy at Fugue Salad is right: LED lights have only two settings--Vegas and More Vegas!

What I can't figure out in the first picture with the light scheme leading up to the temple proper is, what message is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints trying to send to its visitors? Here are some possibilities:
  • We're neither Republican nor Democratic and we don't endorse one party over the other.
  • We're wrapping ourselves in the flag to show our fellow Americans "we're not weird" and we're just as patriotic as the next evangelical who wraps themselves in the Stars & Stripes.
  • We wanted to use purple lights here, but we didn't want to give the appearance of being liberal.
That's the best I can do at this late hour. If you have other captions for this lighting scheme, throw it in here. Now I just have to get to the National Zoo's Zoolights and the Light Festival in Bull Run and my life will be complete. Oh, and my sister and I are trying to nail down an evening to go driving around and find the most hideously decorated house in Fairfax County. If you have a lead on that, let me know.

P.S. Lame content, I know. But I wasn't feeling too hot today and then I fell down the stairs this evening. Bottom line, this is the best I could do with a sore butt and back, a bruised shoulder blade, and Lord-only-knows-what-else that will ache in the morning.

Oh lordy, sorry you fell down the stairs!! Hope you're not too bumped and bruised...

On the lights: Pretty.

Thanks, Di. Fortunately (??), I fell on the stairs going down to the basement, which are carpeted. I'm glad it wasn't the stairs from the upper level to the main floor since those are wood. I think, had been the latter, I'd be in a lot worse shape and in the ER. As it is, I bruised my butt and my right shoulder blade, plus I've got rug burn on my elbow. All in all, though, nothing broken...

As for the lights, yeah, they were pretty. Bright, but pretty.

Ouch, falling down any stairs is never fun, thank heavens you were hurt seriously, althought rug burn ouch.

The lights are beautiful. I can't figure out how to take night pictures with my camera. It maybe impossible. C'est La Vie.

These are beautiful picutres.

Cele: I finally broke down and read the book that came with my camera. It's all about aperture settings. Are you using a "point and shoot" or an SLR? Either way, you just have to adjust your aperture and you'll get steady pictures.

(And I just had a look at my bruises--don't ask how--and I really did myself a doozy! Ouch.)

I like the lights. And I'm also having trouble taking night photos. It never occurred to me to see if there were any special instructions about night photography.... I think I know what I'll do for fun tonight!

p.s. I hope your bruises aren't as vivid as that light show. Which, again, I think is pretty, even in all its "extra Vegas" glory. At least they're energy-efficient....

I'd post pictures of my bruises, but as we're all friends here, I won't. My first rule of friendship is: No one wants to see my naked butt. My second rule is: I don't want to see your naked butt. Least of all in pictures.

As long as we can adhere to those two simple rules, I think we'll be good. Trust me, though, when I say they're deeply, deeply, angry purple. I can't wait to see what happens with my back. That one hasn't bloomed yet, but I'm sure by tonight it'll be its own little bit of spectacular!

Honey, I feel your pain! I took a spill last weekend while wearing my fancy new black stretch boots. I was at the store picking up a few items for a recipe (which I actually haven't gotten around to making yet), and my new and not-roughed-up-yet heel decided to take a little skate across the oh-so-clean (but not wet) floor. I overcorrected and went careening into the cereal shelf. It was pretty spectacular.

My souvenirs (besides the usual invisible aches and pains, exacerbated by advancing age) were a reddish-purple bruise right on the point of my shoulder (where I hit the edge of a shelf), big green bruise and suspicious bump on my foot just below the outside of my ankle (I rolled it pretty good), and dark purple bruise and lump on the inside of my big toe. I'm counting myself very fortunate that I didn't end up with a metatarsal fracture like my mom did a few years ago when she rolled her foot.

Here's to you, Tewkes (raising glass of water and ibuprofen)--happy mending!

JA: OUCH! Sounds like you did a real number on yourself. I'm glad you didn't break anything. I'm glad I didn't break anything. Sheesh. That's all I'd need right now. Feh.

Good Lord, what is it with aging and being less sure footed? I think I was just as shocked that I could fall down the stairs so spectacularly as I was by the fact that I had just fallen.

And the aches? Oh.my.gawd. If I'm gonna hurt like this, I want there to be a benefit like 5 lbs of weight lost or an entire interior painted or a garden landscaped or something. All I have to show for it are bruises. Ha. Not worth it!

Cheers and ibuprofen to you, too!
