Even Scarier

So, two weeks ago, I posted a snapshot of the AOL Straw Poll for President. At that time, the map was very red with some blue states scattered here and there on the coasts. Clearly, a scary map.

This is this week's AOL Straw Poll for President.

Now, I know this is only AOL and I should consider who the majority of AOL users are and I should look at other pollsters, etc., but honestly, I still find this incredibly frightening. To have the map entirely red, with the exception of the District of Columbia--and I've never been prouder of my homebase than I am right now--is scarier than the imminence of the next 9/11. (Sadly, it will happen. It's not a matter of if, but when.)

Seriously, folks. We're not using our heads here. Think, people. Think. McCain = Bush. Naturally, that equals longer economic hardship, longer war in the Middle East and the potential invasion of Iran, a continuation of lies, more lies, and damn lies, bad education policies, no health care policy for 43 millions men, women, and children, and on and on and on.

We need a change. All of this red is bad, bad, bad.

Bad.

So, Auckland, Tauranga, Christchurch, Dunedin, or Wellington?

Lacochran: Seriously! And who thought we'd ever say that?!

I don't know... I have a friend who's dead sure Obama is going to win. But we still need everyone SENSIBLE to get out and vote on the big day to make that happen!

Wow, I was proud of Oregon last week. Naw, I'm still proud of Oregon, I think the poll is grossly skewed.

That poll is bullshit, Tewkes, and you shouldn't even be taking it seriously, let alone posting it. No offense, but AOL is SO 10 years ago -- the only people still using it are old, rural/lower middle class or scared of/resistant to change (ahem -- gmail why don'tcha?)...ie, the very base of red politics. Srsly, that thing is utter twaddle, as my dad would have said.

Also, your pessimism about the imminence (unless you really do mean eminence? LOL) of "another 9/11" is disheartening. That sounds like something a red voter would say or focus on, which kinda bums me out to be honest. I'm not denying that there is terrorism in the world; I am saying that talking about it as such a Sure Thing seems somehow wrong to me. I'm trying to get to post-irony/post-jaded cynicism and back to hope...won't you join me?

Also, don't be scared and defeatist (she said, talking to her own psyche in the form of a blog comment to her friend Tewkes), just stop paying attention to crap statistics. Look for the blue all around you...

AV: I'm confident he can win. I think I'm letting bad polls get the better of me right now, when what I really need to do is a) find a better poll, b) ignore them all, and c) start talking to my friends on the inside in this city who have a handle on the reality of this stuff. In fact, I think I'm going to call Andrew today.

Cele: I think you're right.

Di: You're right. Okay, I gotta find a better, legitimate poll. And you're right, too; I meant imminence. Did I use eminence? Gag. Changing that now. I think my doom and gloom on that one is, if we elect McCain & Co., the world will continue to hate us and a 9/11 type incident is a matter of when, not if. An Obama Administration will bring wisdom, reason, and rational people into positions of power and prominence. Obama will be a dove; McCain will remain a hawk. We need the former. And yes, I'll join you in that hopefulness. (Sorry to bum you out.)

This poll is scary, but it's from AOL. Don't worry about it too much. The reliable news outlets who take into account things like sample size and external factors give a much more positive outlook. It's going to be a tight race, but I think we can do it.

No, you didn't... :-) You just triggered an accidental rant. Lucky you. Sorry I ranted at you!!

Jess: I've found my link to electoral-vote.org and I think that's probably a more reliable map. I'll start using it and should be less scared going forward.

Di: Not a problem! Rants from you I can handle, ergo, you get a pass! Rants from people who don't know me, not so good. :-)
