The other day, a friend forwarded me one of those chain emails that is full of wit and wisdom and requires forwarding to seven other people so I'll have good luck. I always read them, but with the rarest of rare exceptions, I almost never forward them along to others. Anyway--that's not the point of this entry. The point is, the email from the friend had a nugget in it that has had me pondering for some days now.
This is the nugget from a 95-year old grandmother in Florida:
What others think of you is none of your business.
I had things I was going to write about this, or so I thought. Instead I'm going to ask you, my faithful readers, what do you think?* Eventually I'll come back to this and write some more, because I struggle mightily with this and I know others who do, too. Eventually, I'd rather not, but for now it has set me to ponderin'.
* I'm asking what you think about the statement and not what you think of me. The former is of great interest to me. The latter is none of my business. :-)

I can't see why it's none of my business what others think of me. However, I could understand why I wouldn't want to know what others think of me, if I weren't open to all perspectives. Sorry, but I can't stand illogical statements that are disguised as folksy wisdom.
Please forward what I said to 10 of your bestest friends.

I think I'd be a different person if I knew what others thought of me. It's impossible to say how, though.
Phoebe: I think I agree with you on this one. OTOH, I do care, because I want to be kind and conscientious around others so I'll be perceived as someone who is professional and credible. OTOH, I couldn't give a flying f*ck. :-)
LA: There's the rub. OTOH, some feedback might be good and have positive results. OTOH, some might be crap and not worth my time. It's a toss up.
