Spot-on Letter

Among the nine or ten papers I try to read at least once a week, I read the Salt Lake Tribune. I especially like the letters to the editor. Here's one that is particularly noteworthy and, frankly, spot on.

Obama and Palin
Article Last Updated: 09/15/2008 02:20:11 AM MDT

Barack Obama is running against John McCain, not Sarah Palin. What does it mean when a running mate sparks more interest than the candidate? That the candidate is lackluster and nothing to be excited about. In Obama, we have a candidate who we can all genuinely be excited about, who can bring about real change.

Obama needs to rise up out of the mud where Sarah Palin and John McCain would like to drag him and shine. When asked about Palin, he should say: “She and I each bring something historic to our respective tickets. That's all I'm going to say about her because she is not the one I am running against. I'm running against John McCain, who is 90 percent George W. Bush, and the 10 percent of him that isn't is being eclipsed by his running mate. Now, what does that say about him?”

Hammer away at the issues, Sen. Obama. Hammer away at John McCain and soon, instead of being someone no one had ever heard of, Sarah Palin will become someone we never have to hear about again.

Amen, I am absolutely dumbfounded at the mass hysteria surrounding her every word. I think Republicans are so grateful for someone to focus on other than John McCain, that she has become their "darling". I know that sounds condescending and I don't give a damn. Her cutesy one liners are no longer cute. They are appallingly trivial. She is running for the Vice Presidency of the United States for pete sakes. Enough about lipstick and a bridge to nowhere! I want to know, Mrs. Palin, what in the heck you know about running this country. I suspect not much.

Today I mentioned to a friend that I am going to write something about Democrats beginning to lose faith. As the right has become enraptured with their beauty queen, it leaves a lot of us worried that we're losing this thing. To use a Bushism - we have to be resolute; this is something we fail at at times. The right has a way of recognizing their faults, ignoring them, and then moving on as if they don't exist or as if they're positive traits. We need to learn to do that.

At some point the shine will come off the pig. Until then, we need to continue to fight hard and not become demoralized.

VJ: I am, too. A friend of mine pointed out yesterday that part of what she thinks is going on is a morbid and unnatural fascination with a mean girl/cheerleader/beauty queen type. She's the popular girl we all wanted to be in high school but who made us feel like a bunch of schlubs and treated us with indifference. Who wants that in their leaders?

Spencer: You're right! We do need to be resolute. We seem to lose sight of the goal and the dream so easily when the schoolyard bully knocks us down. Rather than fussing about why they don't like or how to get them to like us, we need to hit back. And hard. Bullies like the right thrive on fear and intimidation, because they have nothing of substance to offer. It's time we used our substance as a battering ram and not a flower of peace in the barrel of a gun. (And now I'm mixing my metaphors. Brilliant.)

Kim: Obama definitely needs to get his focus back, that's for sure!

Obama should say exactly that. But the democrats always take the high road. You know what they say, nice guys always finish last. The dems need to finally take their gloves off and go punch for punch.

Scenic: I agree! I think we can still take the high road, but cut it out with the nice guy bullshit. This election is Obama's to lose and if he doesn't start hitting back, we're doomed.

Cele: Excellent video! Thank you. And the Brave New Foundation/PAC looks like an interesting organization. I'll look into them a little more.
